To use test data from your Stripe account when creating Zaps, enable Stripe’s test mode. This allows you to test Zaps steps without affecting real transactions or moving actual money. You can also use it to test when the Zap is on.

This means you to test your Zaps with realistic data without impacting your live Stripe account.

Supported triggers and actions

You can use test mode data with these supported triggers and actions.

1. Enable Stripe's test mode  

In your Stripe account:

  • In the top of the left side nav, click the name of your account. A pop-up will appear.
  • Click Switch to sandbox.
  • In the dropdown menu, select Test mode.

  • An bar will appear at the top of your screen, displaying "Test mode. You're using test data. No real transactions will be processed."

Test mode is now enabled in your Stripe account.

2. Create a Stripe secret API key

  • Follow Stripe's instructions on how to create a secret API key.

3. Connect to Stripe test mode on Zapier

To create an app connection on Zapier to your Stripe account in test mode:

  • Go to the Apps page.
  • Click + Add connection.
  • A new dialog box will appear. Search for and select Stripe.
  • Click Add connection.
  • A Connect an Account page will open in a browser tab or window.
  • In the Test mode secret API key field, enter your Stripe secret key.
  • Click Yes, Continue to Stripe.
  • Log into Stripe to authenticate.
  • Select your Stripe account.
  • Click Continue.

Your Stripe account is now successfully connected to Zapier.

4. Setting up your supported trigger or action

When setting up your Zap with your supported trigger or action, the Configure tab will includes two fields:

  • Use test mode data for the test sample
  • Use test mode data events to trigger Zap

Select True to enable either or both of these options. Once enabled, you can test your Zap when it’s turned off or on.

Use test mode data events to trigger Zap Sends tests when the Zap is turned on to simulate real activity. Supported triggers only.

If these fields do not appear in your Zap, it is likely due to one of these reasons: 

  • Missing Test Mode API Key: Your connected account may not have a Test Mode API Key. You’ll need to reconnect to Stripe again.
  • Unsupported trigger or action: The specific trigger or action you’re using does not support test mode data. 

5. Test your Zap

Test your Zap to verify it is sending the right data to your desired app. 

6. Disable test mode

Once you’ve completed your test, you’ll need to disable test mode in Stripe: 

  • Go back to your Stripe account.
  • In the left side nav, click the name of your account. A pop-up will appear.
  • Click Exit test mode.
  • In the dropdown menu, select Test mode.
  • The Test mode bar at the top of your screen will disappear, confirming that you are no longer in test mode.

Next steps

To use your live Stripe account on Zapier, you will need to:

  • Activate your Stripe account.
  • Create another app connection to Stripe, without adding your Stripe secret key.
