ChatGPT and Zapier work together to automate tasks, using triggers from other apps. You can use this integration to analyze text, generate content, summarize information, and write emails automatically.

Prerequisites

To use the ChatGPT (OpenAI) app on Zapier, you must have:

An OpenAI account with prepaid billing enabled.
- This is separate from the ChatGPT pricing plans, and you do not need a paid ChatGPT subscription.
To use GPT-4 models (including GPT-4o), you must make a successful payment of $5 or more in your OpenAI account. You can do so by purchasing $5 in credits. Learn more about getting access to these models.
API Organization Verification to access certain models, such as reasoning models.

Connect ChatGPT (OpenAI) to Zapier

Find your ChatGPT (OpenAI) credentials

To find your API Key and Organization ID:

Log into your OpenAI account.
In your account settings, click View API keys.
Click + Create new secret key.
Copy the API key to your clipboard.
(Optional) You can find your Organization ID in your Organization settings if you belong to multiple organizations.

Connect to ChatGPT (OpenAI) on Zapier

To create an app connection to ChatGPT (OpenAI) on Zapier:

Go to the Apps page.
Click + Add connection.
A new dialog box will appear. Search for and select ChatGPT (OpenAI).
Click Add connection.
A Connect an Account page will open in a browser tab or window.
Complete the following fields:
- API Key: Enter your API key.
- (Optional) Organization ID: Enter your Organization ID.
Click Yes, Continue to ChatGPT (OpenAI).

Your ChatGPT (OpenAI) account is now successfully connected to Zapier.

Limitations

Usage limits vary depending on your OpenAI plan and are subject to OpenAI's API rate limits.
Each model has maximum combined token limits (input + output), with tokens being charged based on usage. The exact limits vary by model version.
- In conversations, cache tokens may also be used when reusing prior context (often billed at a reduced rate).
- In some advanced models, additional reasoning tokens are consumed for internal "thinking steps" before producing the final output.
If you set the token limit too low, the model may return an empty output text.
When using o3-deep-research model, you must select the Web Search Preview tool in your action or the model will not run.

OpenAI data usage with Zapier

Data sent to OpenAI through Zaps is via OpenAI API. Under OpenAI's API data usage policy, OpenAI will not use API-submitted data to train or improve their models unless you explicitly decide to share your data with them for that purpose (such as by opting in).
