Drafts allow you to make changes to a Zap without turning it off. When you complete your changes, you can publish the draft and it will replace the existing Zap. When you create a draft of a Zap, you can:

  • Save the draft and edit it later.
  • Edit the draft while the Zap continues to run.
  • Publish the draft to replace the current zap.

Each time you publish a Zap, it creates a new version of the Zap so you can review how your Zap has changed over time. You can create a new draft from a previous version. All versions of your Zap are viewable in the sidebar of the Zap editor.

Drafts Versions

Drafts

Drafts allow you to make changes to a Zap without turning it off. When you complete your changes, you can publish the draft and it will replace the existing Zap. When you create a draft of a Zap, you can:

  • Save the draft and edit it later.
  • Edit the draft while the Zap continues to run.
  • Publish the draft to replace the current zap.

Create a draft in a new Zap

When you create a new Zap, your Zap begins as a draft by default. Zapier automatically saves your draft while you’re working. When you finish your draft, click Publish in the top right.

  • Your current draft becomes the current version of the Zap.
  • Your Zap turns on and will trigger whenever a trigger event occurs in your trigger app.
  • When you reopen a Zap after publishing it, the Zap will be in read-only mode.

Create or edit a draft in an existing Zap

After you publish a draft, you can create a new draft of the Zap with the current Zap on or off.

  • If no drafts exist, click Edit Zap in the top right menu to create a new draft.
  • If a draft already exists, click Edit draft in the top right menu.
  • A dialog box will appear.
    • Click Edit existing draft to continue editing the current draft.

Delete a draft

You can delete a draft by replacing it or by deleting it. Deleting a draft is permanent and no changes are made to the current published Zap.

Delete by replacing

  1. Click Edit draft in the top right menu.
  2. A dialog box will appear.
    • Click Replace to delete the existing draft and begin a new one.

Delete from the left sidebar

  1. In the left sidebar, click the Versions icon .
  2. Your draft is located at the top of the list.
  3. Click the trash icon next to your draft.
  4. A dialog box will appear to confirm deletion.
  5. Click Delete.

Limitations

  • Only one draft can exist at a time. If you attempt to create a new draft when one already exists, a dropdown menu will appear asking you to confirm that you want to replace the existing draft. Click:
    • Edit existing draft to continue editing the existing draft.
    • Replace to create a new draft from the most recent published version of the Zap.
  • If the Publish button is grayed out, preventing you from publishing the draft, one of the steps in your Zap may need attention.
  • Steps associated with a Zap that has changed significantly will not replay. This includes changes to:
    • The order or number of steps in the Zap.
    • The apps used in the Zap.
  • If you're a member of a Zapier Enterprise account and your account admins or owners enabled publishing restrictions, you must request their approval before the Zap can be published.

Review changes outline

Zap drafts automatically appear in the Versions section of the Zap editor sidebar when you edit a draft. Once published, the following information will appear for the version in the sidebar and top menu in the Editor:

  • The name of the user who published the version.
  • An auto-generated version number.
  • The date and time that the user published the version.
  • A title of the version, if the user created one (sidebar only).

Zap drafts and previous versions in the left sidebar

View past versions of your Zap

To view a past version of your Zap:

  1. In the Zap editor sidebar, click the Versions icon.
  2. Select the version
  3. Click a step to review a summary of its setup.
Note

If your Zap has not been updated since September 2022, you will see a:

  • “System generated version of legacy Zap” message.
  • 2025 “created at” timestamp in your Zap’s version history instead of a timestamp with the last time you published your Zap.

This is due to Zapier updating your Zaps from a legacy version of the system.

In addition to comparing versions of the Zap from the publish dialog box, you can also compare versions while editing your Zap. You can do so by either:

  • Clicking the Review changes icon in the Versions section of the left sidebar.
  • Clicking the zoom percentage in the top right corner of the editor, then selecting Review changes from the dropdown menu.

In your Zap history:

  • When you view the Zap details page for a specific Zap run, you can see the specific version name and number that the Zap was run on. It appears at the top of the page, below the name of the Zap.
  • You can search for runs from a specific Zap version using the Search Zap history search box. Enter the version number (for example, "v3") or version name in the search box.

Create a new draft from a previous version
